PULSAR - P.D. Version No. 1
---------------------------
by Electronic Illusions
Released 9-4-1992
INTRODUCTION
Pulsar is a game. If you have already tried it, you will probably
have guessed that by now.
If it gets as far as the words 'still loading' and then flips back
to Workbench, chances are that you only have half a meg of memory. The only
way to get around this problem is to go out and buy some more kilobytes.
It is a game for two players, but it has only one objective: shoot
the other player as quickly as possible without letting yourself be shot.
Both players start off with 20 life points and 10 pulses. A pulse can be
fired by pressing the fire button, and the person can be controlled using
the `stick` part of the joystick (believe it or not).
If your life points or pulses begin to run low, there are
re-energisers to, guess what, re-energise your gun and life.
DETAILS
The game takes place on a large map. You will only see two sections
of the map at any one time; one for each player, one above the other.
When one of your `vital statistics` is running dangerously low, a
message will appear reminding you of that fact. If you watch the four
energy-indicators - two for each person - you can see exactly how near you
are to gaining wings and a harp, and flying off to heaven with only a
one-way ticket.
You can use the re-energisers found next to your starting position
to refill your gun and life. However, there are limits - the life energiser
(with a heart symbol) only has 15 extra points, while the gun energiser, once
used, cannot be used again for a minute.
Also scattered around the map are some transporters. These are odd
little yellow things which J.J tells me represent a pad of some kind, which
whisk you off to somewhere else on the map as soon as you move over them.
You will come across some small white arrows on the ground. These
are rather self-explanatory, so I won't bother explaining what they do. If
you haven't guessed by now, try walking over one and then walking off in a
direction different to that shown by the arrow.
COPYING PULSAR
Firstly, please copy Pulsar. It's what P.D. is all about. If,
however, you wish to copy it without using a disk copier (maybe to put it
on a hard-drive, or just in a directory of its own) you will need to make
sure the following files are included:
Pulsar
Pulsar.info (only to load through WB)
PulsarPic.IFF
Map.IFF
Skilltune.abk (don't blame me for the ego boosting name...)
Pulsar.doc (only if you need it)
Pulsar.doc.info (only for WB)
If you plan to load Pulsar through WB, make sure all these files are
in the same directory. You will also need a good Ascii-file shower (More,
Muchmore, PPMore etc.) selected as 'Default Tool' from the Info window
(selected from the WB menu) to show this file.
To load Pulsar from CLI, or anywhere else, simply make sure that the
above files, with the exception of Pulsar (the main program) are in the
current directory. Pulsar itself can be placed anywhere you like, as long as
all the others are in the current directory.
If you wanted to copy without a disk copier, you probably knew all
that already, but it makes this document file look longer and more
important.
If you're really interested, I've included a file called
Pulsar_Source.AMOS. This is the source code for Pulsar, which can be loaded
into AMOS and studied. If you use any code from it in your own programs,
please credit it to me! I take no responsibility for programmers suffering
major heart attacks while trying to fathom out the program - structured
programming is not my cup of tea!
INTO THE FUTURE..
There will possibly be a LicenceWare version of Pulsar at a later
date. Featuring a few more features (?) like the ability to use data disks
containing extra maps, a one-player mode and a practice (i.e. cheat!) mode,
and other wonderful stuff, it will (hopefully) be out, ahh, sometime. Ideas
for this would be appreciated.
ONE LAST THING
Pulsar is P.D.. It is not ShareWare or LicenceWare or anything like
that. It is pure P.D. through and through.
This means that you don`t have to send us any money. But please do
anyway!

Look out for more stuff soon. Bye for now!!
P.S. PULSAR was written in AMOS, the music with OCTAMED, the title screen
with DELUXE PAINT something-or-other, and the other graphics with a thing
called SPRITEX. I probably didn't need to say that, but I don't particularly
want an irate software house writing to me.
